LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK

DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE ONLY THIRTEEN ARTIFICIAL GLASS EYE-MAKERS (CALLED OCULARISTS) IN SOUTH AFRICA? NO? WELL, NEITHER DID I, BEFORE I MET TWO OF THEM!

Pedro and Beryl are a married couple and a team to be admired. These long-standing FMI clients have had their fair share of challenges thrown their way over the years but their steadfast attitude and unfaltering vision (see what I did there?) mean that they had a fantastic story to share.

From the moment we arrived our hearts were stolen by the couple's adorable love for one another and their sincere passion for the work they do and the impact they can make in people's lives. It was a total learning curve for me – who's never considered how losing an eye might affect the way you see the world and also how the world sees you. I also found it really incredible to meet a long-time client of Pedro and Beryl who had nothing but praises to sing for the duo.

When we left I realised what a huge impact FMI's work has. The couple changes the daily reality of people affected by a truly difficult affliction and, when life took a few tricky turns, FMI was there to be a partner with them along the way. Shoo, I'm getting all teary. I'll be needing to put my windscreen wipers on if I continue so I think that's enough for today!

Yours in life done better
